Brilliant cut vs. Rose cut
One of the many exciting attributes of salt and pepper diamonds is that there are so many different cuts, colours and shapes. We are all familiar with the appearance of the brilliant cut, the cut which was developed over time, with the advance of technology to display a diamond in the optimal way, with the right proportions to refract light perfectly. Thankfully, all diamonds, even salt and pepper diamonds have a really high refractive index, which means that they will always be sparkly, even if they are not white, void of inclusions and cut in brilliant cut.
Traditional white diamonds are predominantly cut into a brilliant cut. The exact proportions of this cut mean that light is optimally refracted, which creates the brilliance and lustre of a diamond. Considering that colour diamonds are opaque and full of inclusions, it is not necessary to cut this kind of diamond into a brilliant cut. Due to a diamond’s refractive index, lustre and shine from the facets will always be beautifully present. This means that colour diamonds can be cut and polished into a plethora of interesting shapes and cuts. Colour diamonds are often cut into a rose cut, which in turn spoils the wearer with unique markings and inclusions, due to larger facets acting as little windows to the soul of the diamond.
The 4 C’s and Inclusions
Diamond cuts have evolved and changed so much over the centuries. The cut grade is one of the 4 C’s which influence the diamond price, the more accurate the proportions, the higher the value of the diamond as this would mean the diamond will be as sparkly as it possibly can be.
Today it is very rare to find a white diamond in rose cut, this is considered an antique way of cutting a diamond. Considering salt and pepper diamonds contain varying degrees of inclusions and fractures, it is not necessary to cut them in brilliant cut as they are often opaque or contain a high amount inclusions and therefore we find salt and pepper diamonds in all kinds of different and exciting cuts, most commonly rose cut. Some of Rose and Stone’s favourite cuts are hexagon, kite, shield and heptagon. We do, of course, find salt and pepper diamonds in the traditional cuts, like round brilliant cut or emerald cut and we absolutely adore these diamonds set in your unique diamond engagement ring, but we can offer an array of interesting shapes which can be worn in whatever it may be: engagement rings, wedding rings, anniversary gifts, or push presents.
Size
The benefit of a rose-cut diamond is that on face value the diamond appears bigger, as you do not have a lot of carat weight sitting in “the belly” of the diamond, which would usually be hidden by a setting. And we can’t deny, size does matter when it comes to a diamond…
That said, either a brilliant cut salt and pepper diamond or a rose cut salt and pepper diamond will display beautifully, it is just about finding the right diamond which resonates with you.
