About Rose and Stone

An evolution of the engagement ring

It all started in 2017 when we noticed a new wave of jewellery buyers entering the diamond market. For centuries, people have been obsessing over the traditional brilliant-cut white diamond engagement ring, but a shift was happening and it sparked our curiosity. Adamant to find or co-design unique diamond engagement rings, these customers were demanding fresh alternatives to what had become stock standard and run of the mill - terms one wouldn’t naturally connect with remarkable milestones like saying ‘I do!’ In response to this rapidly-growing collective desire for unique and interesting stones, The Rose and Stone Diamond Store was born.

Gems that look like galaxies

We could never have anticipated the variety of diamonds that exist as we started exploring. Up until fairly recently, coloured diamonds containing inclusions were regarded as faulty or imperfect, but only  because we had only been sold the monopolised idea of the traditional engagement ring.

Our concept of diamonds was being blown wide open - with new cuts, colours and shapes that we had never before imagined. Each diamond was so unique, as though painted with their very own birthmarks. We knew we were onto something beautiful. We had discovered gems that look like galaxies.

The magic of coloured diamonds

Due to the included nature of coloured diamonds, they are a lot more affordable than the traditional white diamond. You may be asking ‘what colour diamonds do you get? And the answer is many. We specialise in coloured, opaque, and salt and pepper diamonds of which the hues are endless - from white and grey diamonds to earthy browns, peach, and sage and forest greens.

Most people also don’t know that salt and pepper diamonds’ hardness is 10 on Mohs Hardness Scale, which means their durability will far outshine any precious or semi-precious stone. Are salt and pepper diamonds expensive? The short answer is no. Read more about that here.

Stones that say something

The diamond you choose for yourself, your bride or groom should do one thing and one thing only - reflect and celebrate the individual wearing it.

Our diamonds are hand-selected for their beauty and uniqueness, helping jewellers select a plethora of exquisite stones for their customers to choose from. Each diamond above 0.50 cts is certified to assure the buyer that the diamond is natural and it hasn’t been heat treated.

While Rose and Stone is wholesale to trade only, we’re always happy to help connect an individual to boutique jewellers with a design aesthetic that aligns with the customer’s ideas for a ring. Maryke van der Spuy, Rose and Stone Diamond Store Chief Executive Officer

About Maryke

The Rose and Stone Diamond Store is owned and run by Maryke van der Spuy. After graduating from Jewellery Design and Manufacture at the University of Stellenbosch in 2009, Maryke spent some time working for renowned South African artist, Nic Bladen. She then moved on to Dear Rae Jewellery where she started as a jewellery manufacturer, but quickly became head of the custom design department up until June 2019.

Here, she facilitated the process of designing clients' dream jewellery pieces. And it is precisely through this experience that she gained an affinity for selecting unique stones - a daily practice which has shaped the way she curates ethically-sourced diamond selections for her Rose and Stone clients, today.

Maryke has a deep love for nature and an intrinsic pull to the more natural things in life. It is because of this appreciation, she says, that she is so attracted to alternative and salt and pepper diamonds.
